SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 18

(By Senator Grubb, Anderson, Bailey, White, Blatnik, Ross, Yoder, Walker, Helmick, Macnaughtan and Schoonover)



Designating the week of February 26 to March 1, 1996, as "Peace Corps Week" and commemorating the service of West Virginians in the Peace Corps.

Whereas, World peace is the centerpiece of America's foreign policy; and
Whereas, During the week of February 26 to March 1, 1996, the Peace Corps will launch a campaign for "Volunteers in West Virginia"; and
Whereas, During the week of February 26 to March 1, 1996, the Peace Corps will celebrate its thirty-fifth anniversary; and
Whereas, The Peace Corps continues to rely on the dedication and commitment of Americans of all ages who volunteer to spend two years helping the people of developing countries to meet their basic needs for health care, food, shelter and education; and
Whereas, There are more than seven thousand volunteers and trainees in ninety-six nations in the Americas, Africa, Asia, the Pacific, the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe; and
Whereas, Since its inception, more than one hundred forty thousand Americans have served in the Peace Corps, including four hundred fifty-two from West Virginia; and
Whereas, There are currently nearly three hundred returned Peace Corps volunteers living in West Virginia and these volunteers have recently formed a West Virginia affiliate of the National Peace Corps Association; and
Whereas, There are currently five West Virginians serving in the Peace Corps; and
Whereas, There are currently twenty-eight Peace Corps applicants from West Virginia; and
Whereas, In recognition of the foregoing, it is appropriate to commend those individuals who have made, and are still making, a contribution to world peace through service in the Peace Corps; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby proclaims the week of February 26 to March 1, 1996, as "Peace Corps Week" in West Virginia; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate hereby congratulates and commends the many dedicated West Virginians who have worked for world peace through service in the Peace Corps; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate calls upon all citizens of the state to join in supporting the aims and programs of the Peace Corps.
