HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 11

L. Smith, Poling, and Spencer)





Designating March 2, 2001, as Osteoporosis Awareness Day at the Legislature and recognizing that osteoporosis prevention, education, and treatment is important to the health and well being of the men and women of this State and should be a central focus of this Legislature.

Whereas, Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for twenty-eight million Americans, eighty percent of whom are women; and
Whereas, One in two women and one in eight men over the age of fifty will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime; and
Whereas, Osteoporosis can strike at any age; and
Whereas, Osteoporosis can affect quality of life by imposing functional limitations, in terms of work and leisure activities and threatens a person's independence and vitality; and
Whereas, In West Virgnia, between the years of 1995-2015, an estimated 8,400 women age fifty and older will die within a year following a hip fracture; and
Whereas, The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that if preventative measures are not taken, more than 250,000 West Virginians will have the disease by 2015; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That March 2, 2001, is hereby declared as Osteoporosis Awareness Day at the Legislature; and, be it
Further Resolved, That addressing osteoporosis treatment and preventative measures should be a priority of the West Virginia Legislature.
