HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 25

Staton, Browning, Perdue and Stephens )

Requesting the Governor of West Virginia, the West Virginia members of the United States Congress, the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and the Commissioner of the Division of Highways to support and assist the completion of the King Coal (I 73/74) Highway.

Whereas, The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) provides for the construction of the King Coal (I 73/74) Highway
from Huntington, West Virginia, to the Virginia state line at Bluefield and Princeton; and
Whereas, Construction of the King Coal (I 73/74)
Highway will significantly contribute to the improvement of transportation into, from, within and through southern West Virginia, assist in regional economic development and generally enhance highway safety; and
Whereas, Federal legislation has designated the King Coal (I 73/74)
Highway as a component of the National Highway System, making the project eligible for federal funds; and
Whereas, The King Coal (I 73/74)
Highway's inclusion in the National Highway System will make it an integral part of the nation's most important long-distance, high-speed highway system, providing efficient, safe and convenient movement of goods and people throughout the United States; and
Whereas, The King Coal (I 73/74)
Highway Authority, a public corporation created by an act of the West Virginia Legislature, highly advocates the recreational, tourism, industrial, economic and community development aspects of the King Coal (I 73/74) Highway; and
Whereas, The prompt construction of the King Coal (I 73/74)
Highway is indispensable to the economic development of southern West Virginia and time is of the essence; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Governor of West Virginia, the West Virginia members of the United States Congress, the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and the Commissioner of the Division of Highways are hereby requested to make all possible efforts to support and assist the completion of the King Coal (I 73/74) Highway; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit copies of this resolution to the Governor of West Virginia, the West Virginia members of the United States Congress, the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and the Commissioner of the Division of Highways in order that they may be apprised of the sense of the West Virginia Legislature in this matter.
