HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 33

Mezzatesta, Varner, Kominar, Warner,

Campbell, Williams and Stemple)

Requesting the Joint Committee on Government and Finance conduct a study to determine the best means of recruitment and continued retention of volunteer fire fighters.

Whereas, Volunteer fire departments and the men and women volunteer fire fighters play a very important role in the safety of the citizens of our state; and
Whereas, The continued viability of volunteer fire departments is the men and women volunteering to serve as fire fighters; and
Whereas, To assure the continued existence of our volunteer fire departments and the continued safety of the citizens of West Virginia, the recruitment and retention of volunteer fire fighters is crucial; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Joint Committee on Government and Finance is hereby requested to study the various means, incentives and methods for volunteer fire departments to attract, recruit and retain competent volunteer fire fighters; and be it
Further Resolved, That the committee shall report to the Legislature its findings, conclusions and recommendations, together with drafts of any legislation necessary to effectuate its recommendations no later than the first day of January, two thousand three; and be it
Further Resolved, That the expenses necessary to conduct the study and to prepare appropriate reports, recommendations and proposed legislation be paid from legislative appropriations to the Joint Committee on Government and Finance.


This resolution is recommended for adoption in the 2002 Regular Session by the Joint Committee on Pensions and Retirement.
