HOUSE RESOLUTION 29


(By Mr. Speaker, Mr. Kiss and All Members of the House

of Delegates)


[Unanimously Adopted by the House of Delegates on March 2, 2006]



"Commemorating the life of George E. Farley, gentleman, statesman, friend and former member of the House of Delegates from Wood County, West Virginia."


Whereas, George Farley was born December 23, 1929, in Ritchie County, West Virginia. A son of the late Charles W. and Sweetlyn R. Farley, he was educated in the Wood County public schools and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College; and
Whereas, Mr. George Farley was a veteran who served in the Navy during the Korean War; and
Whereas, On April 16, 1954, he married the former Jean Dye of Parkersburg, and together they had two daughters, Brenda L. And Lynda J., who all survive him; and
Whereas, Mr. Farley, who resided at Parkersburg, served his State with honor and distinction in this Legislative Body. He was first elected to represent the 8th District in Wood County in 1970, and served nine terms until 1990; and

Whereas, During his service in the House of Delegates, Mr. Farley was the longtime Chairman of the Finance Committee, and he was widely acknowledged, recognized and respected for his expertise on the state budget and other fiscal matters; and
Whereas, Mr. Farley was a Deacon at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Parkersburg and was a member of the Wood County Farm Bureau, the Parkersburg Life Underwriters, the West Virginia Health Association and numerous other organizations; and
Whereas, Mr. Farley was a quiet man, almost unassuming in nature, who possessed great class, dignity and integrity, and who genuinely cared not only for the constituency he represented but also for the people of the whole State of West Virginia. He was a great friend, adviser and confidante, and his dry sense of humor could easily evaporate the stress of Speakers with whom he served; and
Whereas, George Farley departed this earthly life on October 6, 2005, at the age of seventy-six and his passing should not go unnoticed; therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Delegates:
That regret is hereby expressed by the members of the House of Delegates at the passing of George E. Farley, gentleman, friend, adviser, confidante, statesman, former member and former Finance Chairman of the House of Delegates; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates be hereby requested to provide certified copies of this Resolution for his surviving wife, Jean Farley, and for his daughters, Brenda L. Dougherty and Lynda J. Farley.
