SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 7

(By Senators Redd, Ross, Caldwell, Kessler, Love, McKenzie, Oliverio, Facemyer and Rowe)

__________

[Originating in the Committee on Transportation; reported February 23, 2001.]

__________

Requesting the Commissioner of the Division of Highways name that certain bridge which crosses over the Guyandotte River at Roach, West Virginia, connecting McComas Road and Hinchman Bend Road, as the "Burl Farley Bridge".

Whereas, Burl Farley, a farmer and foreman at the Coal Crane Lumber Company, owned a 212-acre farm near Roach in Cabell County where he lived and raised a family; and

Whereas, In 1926 Burl Farley approached the Cabell County Commission (then the Cabell County Court) and proposed the construction of a bridge over the Guyandotte River where then only
a ford existed; and
Whereas, Burl Farley donated the land for the construction of the bridge and gave a right-of-way through his farm for access to the bridge for traffic; and

Whereas, The descendants of Burl Farley still live, farm and raise their families on the original family farm; and

Whereas, It is a fitting tribute to Burl Farley that this bridge, the building of which he had advocated for the good of his county, be named in memory of this community-minded, hard-working West Virginian; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Commissioner of the Division of Highways is hereby requested to designate that certain bridge which crosses over the Guyandotte River at Roach, West Virginia, connecting McComas Road and Hinchman Bend Road, as the "Burl Farley Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the commissioner is requested to have made and be placed, at either end of the bridge, signs identifying the bridge as the "Burl Farley Bridge"; and be it

Further resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of
Transportation, the Commissioner of the Division of Highways and the family of Burl Farley.
