SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 14

(By Senators Bowman, McKenzie, Anderson, Bailey, Boley, Burnette, Caldwell, Craigo, Deem, Edgell, Facemyer, Fanning, Helmick, Hunter, Jackson, Kessler, Love, McCabe, Minard, Minear, Mitchell, Oliverio, Plymale, Prezioso, Redd, Ross, Rowe, Sharpe, Snyder, Sprouse, Unger, Wooton and Tomblin, Mr. President)

Designating March 13, 2001, as "Stand Up for Steel" day.
Whereas, Illegal dumping and subsidizing of foreign steel in our nation's steel industry have cost thousands of steelworkers their jobs in the United States; and
Whereas, America has prided itself on its ability to fairly participate in the global marketplace. However, illegal dumping of foreign steel at reduced prices has caused financial chaos within the American steel industry; and
Whereas, Although progress has been made by the efforts of our steelworkers and legislatures across the nation, the matter of illegal dumping of foreign steel in the United States remains a major matter of contention in our steel industry; and
Whereas, As in the past, all West Virginians are urged to rise for the industry that has built this great nation; and
Whereas, The continued vigilance on the part of our federal legislators should enable the new President of the United States and his new administration to gain a thorough understanding of the impact that illegal dumping and subsidizing of foreign steel are having on America's steel industry and they should ensure that our nation's trade laws are enforced; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby designates March 13, 2001, as "Stand Up for Steel" day; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate calls upon all West Virginians to maintain a vigilance to ensure that the trade laws of our nation are enforced and that illegal dumping of foreign steel in our country is eliminated; and, be it
Further Resolved, That our nation's leaders are called upon to ensure that our U. S. trade laws are enforced so that illegal dumping and subsidizing of foreign steel in our nation are eliminated; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the President of the United States, the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives.
