SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 31

Foster, Unger, Caruth, McKenzie, Dempsey, Fanning, Jenkins,
Minard, Love and Sprouse)
Designating March 31, 2005, as "Friends of Coal Day".
Whereas, Since the formation of this state during the Civil
War, there has been one constant, basic and essential industry that
has fueled this state's economy, supported this nation through two
world wars and other international conflicts and stands ready today
to help this country become energy self-sufficient and that
industry is coal; and
Whereas, The extraction of coal from the hills and valleys of
this state has been an integral part of the social and economic
life of millions of West Virginians; and
Whereas, Coal miners and their families represent a proud
heritage of courage, strength of character and quiet confidence
that has the respect and admiration of all West Virginians; and
Whereas, The economic vitality of the coal industry is
critically important to the future well-being of West Virginia and
its citizens; and
Whereas, "Friends of Coal" is a grassroots organization involving thousands of West Virginians, as well as citizens of
other states, who are working diligently to ensure the future of
West Virginia through a vibrant, essential and productive coal
industry; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby designates March 31, 2005, as "Friends
of Coal Day"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to the Governor, the members of West
Virginia's congressional delegation and the appropriate
representatives of "Friends of Coal".
