Ron Thompson

West Virginia Lawmaker Heads Capitol Ministries Group

The West Virginia Capitol Ministries program allows West Virginia Lawmakers and all staff of any denomination take a moment to worship during the 77th Legislative Session.

Delegate Ron Thompson, D-Raleigh, who helped coordinate with Capitol Ministires, held its first bible study on Thursday Febuary the 10, 2005 which drew 11 lawmakers and was headed up by Tim Pauley, Ministry Leader. The meetings take place once a week for 50 minutes on Thursdays at 8:00 AM in the Governor’s Conference Room located in the Secretary of State’s Office.

The first bible study meeting was held on February 10th, 2005 and had 11 Lawmakers in attendance.

The states that currently have Capitol Ministry Programs are: California, Nebraska, South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and now West Virginia.

“As a Christain, I am very excited about this program and hope that more individuals will take part in our weekly meetings,” stated Delegate Thompson.

The motto of Capitol Ministries is “delivering the gospel to every state legislator, in every state capitol, every year.”

The biblical basis for the ministry is: the bible reveals to us that God has special desire to reach “kings and all who are in authority” (1 Timothy 2). From the Old Testament to the New Testament, God emphasizes reaching political leaders with God’s truth, His saving gospel. This is an important emphasis within the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19, 20).

In 1 Timothy 2:1,2, Paul instructs Timothy to lead the church in the priority of evangilistic prayers on behalf of”...all men, for kings and all who are in authority....”

“I hope this group will not only have great participation during this Legislative Session, but also continue throughout the year,” added Delegate Thompson.

Delegate Thompson noted, “During these very busy and hectic days of the Legislative Session its very nice to have a time set aside to reflect upon the teachings of the bible which helps guide us through our daily lives both in and out of the legislative process.”
